FISHOWER
Fishower is a product that manages the duration of a user's shower. When the user isn't sure of the time they will spend showering, the product will remind the user how long they have been in there. Having a short time shower will reward some credit to exchange a digital fish on the app that you can take care of. The engages of the users by successfully keeping fish, and battle with friends to win the fisher games!
BRIEF
Craft an out of box experience that facilitates behavior modification resulting in a change of actions.

KEY INSIGHT
According to secondary research, people shouldn't shower for more than 5 to 10 minutes. The longer you spend time in the water, the more your skin can dry out. Also, taking long showers is bad for the environment. The longer hot water runs, the higher energy use and utility bills rise. At the same time, people usually don't know exactly how long they spend in showers.

OPPORTUNITY
How to remind and motivate people to take quick showers?
FEATURES
01
Setting planned shower time
Sliding down the shower time setting menu. The circle slider in the middle is to set an ideal or planned shower time. The toggle button under the circle slider is to set whether to turn off the shower head if it exceeds the set time.

02
Reminding time with blinking indicator light
The blinking indicator will change from green to red depending on the duration of the showering time. When the red light stops flashing, the water will be turned off.
03
Indicating the shower room usage
When someone is taking a shower, the indicated items on the App will change from green to red and show how long the person will take.

04
Collecting tokens to exchange fishes
Different fish have different prices and values. The way to exchange fish is to collect tokens. Users will receive a token every time they finish showering. The shorter the shower time is, the more tokens users will receive.
05

Tracking the history of water usage
Users can view and track showering time and water consumption at any time. When multiple people connect to the same device, the system automatically adds them as a group and shares their usage to others in the group.
Process
RESEARCH
" According to Dr. Erum Ilyas, MD, MBE, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist, the longer you spend in the water, the more your skin can dry out."
- The amount of time you should spend in the shower depends on what you do in there
" Water is one of our most precious finite resources—we literally can’t live without it. Did you know up to 20% of our indoor water usage is spent in the shower? "
- Fremont Green Challenge: Take Shorter Showers
DIRECTION
To understand the problem I was working with, I conducted in-person and over the phone interviews with three individuals who like to spend a lot of time showering. I also interviewed people who were living with roommates who shower for a long time. Questions included those regarding shower habits, frequency/methods, and pain points or discomfort about the long shower.

Chengyuan
20/ Graphic design student
“ I'm not sure how long I spend on showering, but I usually check the time before and after I take a shower.”

Dayeon
22/ Interaction design student
"I don't know how much water I usually spend on showering before I received my monthly bill. Even that, I still don't know exactly the water used for showering."

Mikayla
21/ Interaction design student
“ I was sharing the bathroom with 5 girls. If I want to use the bathroom when someone was showering, I have to wait in front of the door.”
SYNTHESIS
After the interviews, I compiled the findings I got from each person into groups based on reoccurring themes. All the interviewees mentioned that they don't know the time when they are showering. The biggest roadblocks cited were not realizing time and water usage, and not knowing if there was anyone in shower.
The key to encouraging this behavior was twofold: individuals had to be reminded of the shower time, but more importantly, motivated to take a short shower in the moment.
Here were some insights and potential opportunities I found:
01
People want to save water without knowing how to save it.
There is an opportunity to make water-saving recommendations based on showering steps and water usage.
02
03
People don't feel motivated to adjust the duration of their showering time.
There is an opportunity to facilitate peers encouraging each other by making it a social norm.
People have friction because of the right to use the bathroom at the same time with other roommates.
There is an opportunity to show the bathroom usage to all people who share the same bathroom to reduce friction.
04
People feel hard to know their personal showering water usage when they are sharing with other roommates.
There is an opportunity to create a network for sharing the shower experiences from every individual in the group.
IDEATION
How to remind and motivate people to take shorter showers?
CONCEPTS
While ideating, I targeted the concepts towards students, and people who are sharing bathrooms with others. This range of users has many frictions of sharing a bathroom and shower room with others, also their time doesn't allow them spending large time on showering. Also, it is easier to instill water-saving habits at a young age.
After reviewing the ideas with my peers, I decided to combine two of my concepts together. By having a time reminder connect with shower head and a mobile app, individuals have a real-time indicator of shower time they have already spent. I want to encourage the enthusiasm of users for taking shorter showers, I added a fish farming system to increase the playability of users.

SYSTEM
With my concept taking shape, I now had to figure out how to convey the user experience. I investigated the mechanics of my concept through system diagrams and the user experience map.

STORYTELLING
Before shooting the video, I sketched out storyboards showing how Fishower would be discovered, used, and facilitate behavior change.

DESIGN
Bringing the product to life!
STYLE DESIGN
I wanted Fishower's visual identity to let users feel relaxed and the interface to be clean and easy to use, with the focus being the water level and the number of fish that directly could be influenced by the user's shower time.

LOGO
Water is the core of the Fishower, and the logo is also an extension of this core while adding the fish elements used in the mobile app.

PACKAGING + DEVICES DESIGN

REFLECTION
What I learned from this project.
This four-week project allowed me to systematically design a product to discover how to motivate people to change their behavior. It's challenging, but exploring some of the routines and finding out how to use the internal and external factors that drive people to continue their habits is a reward for me.
In terms of project development, it's fascinating to extend my ideas into different areas and learn how to effectively balance them to create the best end product. By focusing on the entire "out-of-the-box" experience, I was forced to design beyond the user's journey within the product and zooming out the factors that affected the entire experience. I explored filming a powerful narrative method with which I had not done a lot of exercises before.
If I have more time, I would build other features, such as gaming and social aspects, and expand on the purchasing space that monetizes the app. I would also consider allowing users to create large social groups to make the experience more personal and engaging.
